On our last day in Vietnam, we went for our last Vietnamese lunch at Pots and Pans, which is fairly new and has been set up by people who have previously been at KOTO. It’s a really good, really classy restaurant.

When we visited we one of only tables of customers – Pots and Pans is in the French Quarter and feels slightly off the beaten track. It is definitely worth seeking out though.  The service was excellent. And the decor is really nice – table cloths, napkins, pictures on the walls, nice furniture, all very good.

We had a couple of really fantastic fresh juices and two main courses. One black sesame noodles with mushrooms was top-notch. One aubergine, courgette and pumpkin cannelloni with lemongrass and bechamel sauce was good,  maybe a little too much sauce, but really well put together.

Top quality food and service for 30 US$. Brilliant.

There is much to like about Restaurant Bloom. The proceeds go to supporting street children and getting them through education and training. And the cakes are really good. And it is a good place to sit out an afternoon rainstorm. All good.

On our visit two of the veggie options – soft rolls and egg rolls – were not available. So we went for a veggie burger, shared between us, which included courgette, aubergine and tomato in a bun with chips, followed by an almond cake, with a coffee and a large bottle of water.

The burger hit the spot, and the cake was good (when I’d managed to get a big, rather than small portion!), but the service was on the slow side – I guess our fault for arriving in mid-afternoon.

This is a good little cafe, and makes a good cake and coffee spot.

Score: 4/10

The Bo De is a veggie restaurant next to the river in Hue, on the other side from the Citadel complex. The seating is outside but covered and the place is pretty simple. It does have a long veggie menu though, including some mock meats.

We kept it simple and went for two portions of steamed rice, one sweetcorn, one steamed green beans, one tofu, one water and one long lemon and honey drink. At 134,000 Vietnamese Dong this place is pretty cheap. The cooking is simple – no use of herbs in the way we’d gotten used to in Hoi An and somewhat on the greasy side.

This a good centrally located place to eat and is a good place to find veggie Vietnamese food in Hue. What lets it down is that after you’ve eaten good Vietnamese food in other places, the food here is lacking in flavour.

Morning Glory is a Vietnamese street food restaurant and cooking school. It’s a great spot, with good food and good service.

For veggies there is a choice of half a dozen dishes and vegetable dishes. The veggie fresh spring rolls were amazing, green beans with onion and taro were excellent and aubergines cooked with garlic and spring onion were delicious. Also, this is another of the places in town that serve orange and lime juice drinks, one of the best discoveries of our time away. Three dishes plus rice and two drinks came to 300,000 Vietnamese Dong.

The restaurant is popular and was full when we visited, booking is advisable unless you want to wait for a table.

After a morning spent looking at the Cham ruins near Hoi An, we came back to town looking for a late lunch and found our way to The Market Restaurant and cookery School, which is on An Hoi Islet. I’m very glad we did, as I think this was probably the best restaurant we visited in Vietnam, it was brilliant.

Think three stories, lots of food counters in the main area downstairs, a first floor seafood restaurant and a second floor training kitchen. Think fresh juices, fresh cooked food and ice cream. Think of a great veggie selection. There you have it, heaven.

We had the best deep fried tofu anywhere in the world, stir fired veg with rice noodles with veg fresh and tasty and not swamped. For juices, one passion fruit with ice cream and one really excellent orange and lime juice (why can I not get this in the UK?) and for puddings one vanilla ice cream and one portion of back sesame paste which manged to be nutty and chocolate-y at the same time. All for around 300,000 Dong.

Service was great and the place was full. Just brilliant.

We wandered out and back along the river to our hotel. In the evening you get the night market outside. Top spot.

The Cargo Club is a Vietnamese and International restaurant overlooking the river in Hoi An, with nice views and lots of tourists. There are lots of meat dishes, some cooked at the table in front of you, but the veggie options are bit more limited. Our veggie pizza and veggie burger hit the spot after a day travelling – this was our first evening in town – but as we were to find out, Cargo Club is nice but there is better veggie food elsewhere in town. Price for two main courses and a couple of drinks came in at around 300,000 Dong.

Ly Club is a colonial style restaurant close to the Museum of Vietnamese History in Hanoi. Having spent the morning in the Museum, it closed for lunch and we wandered to Ly Club. We were shown in to a dining room full of French style furnishing and found we were the only people there, which meant that for almost the whole meal it was like having a private dining experience. This happened at lunch time in a couple of restaurants we visited in Hanoi – not sure why, I suspect this is slightly off the track for most tourists. Their loss meant we had the place and the service to ourselves.

Between two we had two juices, one portion of greens, one rice and one pumpkin soup. The soup was a little on the sweet side but everything was pretty good. The menu isn’t extensive in terms of veggie choices, but otherwise this is nice spot for lunch. The bill was 381 Vietnamese Dong (approx 18.22US$). Really it’s worth visiting for the Colonial vibe – if you spend most of your time in the Old Quarter this will be a peaceful contrast.

We headed back to the Museum, to find that a ticket is valid all day, so we could finish looking round, including at the various statues outside in the gardens.

The Little Gem Cafe is part of the Hotel Moment II in Hanoi. The hotel is lovely – great rooms and excellent service. The restaurant is also pretty good. Service is friendly and helpful. The food is a mix of Vietnamese and Western. Veggie spring rolls were good, pasta was fine. The real hit were the fresh juices, brilliant.

We ate well in Vietnam and it is hard to choose a favourite, Koto would be in my top two I think. For starters, the location is good on the street next to the Temple of Literature. It’s also on the same street as a couple of fair-trade souvenir sellers. And it’s a restaurant that trains and employs street children. Inside the restaurant is swish, spread over four floors and has nice staff and good loos. And last, but not least, the menu has some really good veggie dishes.

We visited twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. At lunchtime it was busier, I think with coach parties who have been to the Temple of Literature, in the evening it was a little quieter and easier to get a table.

On our lunchtime visit we had a couple of fresh juice drinks, a falafel wrap and a veggie noodle stir-fry. Both excellent, with the bill coming to 325 V$ or 16.25 US$. When we visited for dinner we had the stir fry again (it was that good) and a dish of tofu and squash (good, although too much tofu and not enough squash for me) followed by the most enormous apple tart for pudding I have ever come across. Feel into a taxi afterwards stuffed and happy. Brill.

Located on a corner plot in Kowloon, this veggie restaurant was packed when we arrived around 8pm in the evening. As always being full is a good sign, this is one of the best places we ate at. I’m not normally one for mock meat, I can’t really see the point and would usually rather eat vegetables, but here the mock chicken was brilliant and the greens and the dumplings were also good. Not convinced about the tofu as mock-meat, but otherwise this was very good. At 312 HK$ for four people this is a good cheap place to head for veggie dim sum.
